# Halloween Puzzle Books for KDP: What to Publish, and When

Seasonal puzzle books are won or lost on the calendar. Here is when a Halloween title needs to be live, what goes inside it, and the print settings that trip people up.

## The calendar is the whole game

A Halloween puzzle book is not competing on quality alone. It is competing against listings that have been on Amazon long enough to gather reviews, sales history and search relevance. A book that goes live in mid-October is entering a race that started weeks earlier.

Working backwards from 31 October:

If you are reading this later than that, the honest move is to build the book anyway and publish it. A Halloween title that exists in November starts next September already indexed, with a year of listing age behind it. That is worth considerably more than a rushed release into the busiest fortnight.

They are deliberately different from one another rather than eight variations on the word _pumpkin_. **Haunted House** is architectural — attic, cellar, banister, floorboard. **Witches & Wizards** is magical rather than frightening, which suits a younger audience. **Day of the Dead** is a celebration of remembrance and is written that way, with marigolds, ofrendas and monarch butterflies rather than horror vocabulary.

### A note on age range

Halloween sells to two audiences that want different books. Children's activity books lean on mazes, large type and simple word searches. Adult books lean on denser grids and codewords. Trying to serve both in one title usually satisfies neither, and the reviews say so.

## The print settings that cause rejections

Seasonal books are rejected for the same reasons any book is, but the deadline makes each rejection more expensive. Three catch people repeatedly:

-   **The spine width is wrong.** It is page count multiplied by the paper's thickness — `0.002252` inches per page on white, `0.0025` on cream. Add ten puzzles and the spine changes, so a cover designed before the interior was finished is almost always wrong.
-   **The gutter is too small.** The inside margin steps with page count: 0.375 inches up to 150 pages, 0.5 inches from 151. A book that grew past 150 pages during editing needs its margins redone.
-   **The page count is odd.** Every printed book has an even page count. A solutions section that ends on an odd page needs a blank before the back cover.
