# Puzzle Book Page Count Calculator

How many puzzles do you need? The answer is never just “one per page” — the answer keys are pages too, and forgetting them is what moves your gutter and your spine width after the cover is already made.

## The mistake this exists to prevent

Almost every first puzzle book is planned as “100 puzzles, one per page, so about 100 pages.” Then the answer keys get added and the book is 130 pages, and three things change at once:

-   **The gutter may step up.** Amazon’s required inside margin grows with page count, so a longer book needs a wider inside margin than the one you laid out.
-   **The spine gets wider.** Spine width is page count multiplied by paper thickness, so a cover built for the planned length is now the wrong size.
-   **The printing cost rises**, which moves the price you need to charge to keep a royalty.

None of this is hard. It is just easy to discover in the wrong order — usually after the cover is finished.

## How the numbers are worked out

**Puzzle pages** are the puzzle count divided by how many fit on a page, rounded up. Large-print books usually run one per page; compact word searches and small sudoku often take two or four.

**Solution pages** are the same calculation at a higher density, because answer keys are typically printed smaller. Four per page is a common choice; six or eight works for small grids.

**Front matter** covers your title page, copyright page, and optionally an instructions page or a “this book belongs to” page. Three is a reasonable default.

**The even-page rule:** KDP requires an even page count, so an odd total gets one blank page added. The calculator does this for you, because that blank page is what tips a 149-page book to 150 and occasionally into a different gutter tier.

## The limits

KDP’s minimum is **24 pages** for every paper stock. The maximum depends on the paper you choose, because thicker stock hits the binding limit sooner:

A 790-page book is fine on white and cannot exist on cream. If you are planning something long, choose the paper before you choose the length.

## What page count to aim for

There is no single right answer, but the constraints narrow it usefully:

-   **Below 24 pages the book cannot exist** on KDP at all.
-   **Below about 100 pages** the spine is too narrow to carry readable text, so the title only appears on the front and back.
-   **Crossing 150 pages** costs you an extra 0.125″ of inside margin, which is real page area on a puzzle grid.
-   **Longer books cost more to print**, which raises the minimum viable list price.

For a large-print word search collection, one puzzle per page with four solutions per page puts a 100-puzzle book at roughly 128 pages — comfortably inside the first gutter tier, with a spine wide enough to print on. That is a good default to plan against, and this calculator will show you what your own choices do to it.
