Most word search generators end where the puzzle ends. You get a grid and an answer key, usually as an image, and everything after that is yours to solve in a word processor. That is where puzzle-book projects stall, because the remaining work is unglamorous and unforgiving:
Any one of these done wrong gets the upload rejected or the book returned. Together they are several days of layout work per title, repeated for every volume.
A book is sections, not a flat list. A large-print word search collection might run easy, medium and hard, each with its own opening page. Set the structure once and the puzzles fill it; the order you designed is the order that prints.
Title page, copyright page, an optional “this book belongs to” page and an instructions page are all toggles rather than pages you build. Your author name, imprint and any extra copyright lines — an ISBN, a rights notice — come from your publisher profile, so they are typed once per imprint rather than once per book.
Generated from the puzzles themselves, so it cannot drift out of step with them. This is the part people most often assemble by hand and most often get wrong — a solutions page that has been re-ordered, or a key belonging to a puzzle that was later replaced, is the defect readers complain about most.
Amazon requires an even page count, so a book that lands on an odd number needs a blank page added at the end — ours pads automatically. The required inside margin steps up with page count: 0.375″ up to 150 pages, 0.5″ to 300, 0.625″ to 500, 0.75″ to 700, then 0.875″. Add ten more puzzles and you may cross a boundary, which means the margins that passed review last month are no longer sufficient. It is recomputed on every export.
A KDP wrap cover is one flat image containing back, spine and front. The spine width comes from the page count and the paper stock, so it changes whenever the interior does. Ours reads the live page count, which means the cover cannot fall out of sync with the book — the single most common cause of a rejected cover.
A detail that only shows up in print. Many free generators hand you a raster image of the grid — effectively a screenshot. On screen it looks perfect. At 300 DPI on paper the letters go soft, and the grid lines pick up a faint stagger where pixels round to the printer’s dots.
Puzzles here are drawn as vectors and stay vectors all the way into the PDF, so the letters are as crisp as the type around them at any trim size.
Word search books sell as series far more than as single titles. Once volume one is designed, volume two should be a rebuild of the puzzles inside an unchanged shell — same trim, same typography, same cover, no repeated grids.
